UCians feted in Kafagway Sports Awards

February 12, 2018

Five athletes from the University of the Cordilleras who successfully represented the Philippines in various international sports events were recognized in this year's Kafagway International Sports Luminary Awards (KISLA) by the National Correspondents Club of Baguio.

UC Criminology graduates Mark Stephen Loman and Marques Sangiao led the roster of this year's awardees.

Loman was named the "Super Athlete of the Year" for winning the inaugural Brave Combat Federation World Bantamweight Championship title in Bahrain last year.

Sangiao, the founder of Baguio-based Team Lakay, was recognized as the "Super Coach of the Year." Sangiao was recently ranked the second top mixed martial arts coach in Asia by ONE Championship. Team Lakay was also named the "Team of the Decade" for its lineup of decorated MMA fighters.

Eduard Folayang, former One Championship World Lightweight Champion and UC Education alumnus, received the KISLA Sportsmanship Award for his incredible display of sportsmanship during his last title match.

Divine Wally, a third-year Education student, was named the "Athlete of the Decade" for her 4-2-1 medal haul in international Wushu Sanda competitions since 2013. Wally is the first-ever member of the Philippine Wushu Team to win two gold medals in two international wushu competitions in one year.

Fellow Education alumna Sandi Menchi Abahan received the "Ultramarathoner of the Year" award. Abahan is known for recording the best time for any Filipino marathoner in the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in France.

On the other hand, Dr. Danilo Cong-o, Director of UC's Center for Sports Development, was also selected as the "Athletic Director of the Year." Under his tutelage, UC was able to claim the 2017 Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League Overall Champion crown.

In addition, UC was also recognized by the KISLA as the educational institution with the most number of outstanding international athletes (in martial arts) in Baguio City.
