Training Course on Riverine Ecology and Pollution Management: "The Balili River Experience"

The Center for Lifelong Professional Education and Languages (CLPEL) of the University of the Cordilleras in Partnership with Benguet State University will conduct a five-day training course on Riverine Ecology and Pollution Management: "The Balili River Experience", on May 21-25, 2012 at the Benguet State University - Main Building, College of Arts & Sciences, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The training course will consists of topics in Basic Concepts of Limnology (Rhealogy/Potamology), River Basin Management, River Water Quality Monitoring, Water Quality Measurement and Water Quality Assessment (Classification of Philippine Inland Waters and Water Quality Criteria).

Registration is until May 11, 2012 with a fee of Php. 5,000.00, inclusions of Lunch, Morning and Afternoon Snacks, Training Materials, Laboratory Usage & Certificate.

Training Objectives

The five-day training course on Basic Concepts of Riverine Ecology and Pollution Management with the Balili River as a model is aimed to:

  1. provide teachers of Biology (specially Ecology) and Environmental Science, the needed training on basic concepts of Riverine Ecology with focus first on its normal ecology and then the kinds and sources of pollution, the evaluation of their impacts as well as systems of amelioration management and control;
  2. enhance the awareness of the students, teachers, government officials specially those involved in Environmental Resources Management and the general public on the important roles or functions of riverine ecosystems on the welfare of a community;
  3. train some faculty members, students and researchers on the basic methods of studying the geology, physics, chemistry, biology and sociology of riverine ecosystems so that management policies could be properly based on ecological research methods, principles of pollution management as well as good governance based on scientific knowledge, social values and ethics;
  4. enable people and agencies working on the Rehabilitation of Balili River to understand and appreciate the scientific knowledge and technology as well as holistic social attitudes and perspectives needed for its rehabilitation as well as the proper management of its uses in the future;
  5. enhance the interests of educational institutions and possibly some government agencies on the important roles of riverine ecosystems in the community and hence strive for its proper quality maintenance and developmental uses.

On November 10, 2012, the Research & Development Center (R&DC) together with the College of Teacher Education (CTE) organized an institutional Research Capability-Building Activity entitled "Transforming Research Outputs into Publishable Journal Article" with the aim of enabling participants to gain a broader understanding of the basic parts of the publishable research article; and more importantly, to assist and walk the participants through the actual transformation of their research outputs into publishable journal articles. To fully attain and materialize the most essential objective of the activity, a follow-through workshop will be conducted by R&DC on December 7, 2012, 8:00am - 5:00pm at M204, to come up with more rigorous task of presentation, critiquing, and completely transforming the research outputs of the participants for publication.

November 12, 2012

The Research and Development Center of the University together with the College of Teacher Education will be conducting an institutional Research Capability Building Seminar-Workshop entitled: "Transforming Research Outputs into Publishable Journal Article", on November 10, 2012, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at GB 311-312. The seminar workshop aims to provide faculty researchers with the technical-knowhow and guidelines for writing and publishing a research output in a peer-reviewed journal. This seminar-workshop gives special attention to problems and challenges related to publishing from integrative (i.e., interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary) landscape research.
